What grief can look like
Waves of sadness that arrive without warning. Anger, guilt, or relief that's hard to admit. Feeling fine for weeks and then undone by a song or a date on the calendar. Grief is not a problem to fix — it's a process to be supported through, at your own pace. Grief is different for everyone. For some people it's waves of sadness that arrive without warning. For others it's anger, guilt, numbness, trouble sleeping, or relief that's hard to admit. Feeling fine for weeks and then coming undone by a song or a date on the calendar is normal. Grief is not a problem to fix — it's a process to be supported through, at your own pace.
Losses we help with
How grief counseling helps
Grief counseling offers a place where you don't have to manage anyone else's feelings about your loss. Your therapist makes room for the whole story — what you lost, what it meant, and what it means now — and helps you carry it in a way that lets life keep moving. Many clients tell us they waited months or years to reach out, worried they should be 'over it' by now. There is no over it — there is learning to live with the loss, and that is exactly what therapy supports.
Our grief counselors serve clients across the Chicago area, with offices in Evanston on the North Shore and Naperville in the western suburbs, and secure online sessions anywhere in Illinois.

What to expect in grief therapy
- 1
A first session that moves at your pace
you share what you want to share; there's nothing to prepare.
- 2
A plan shaped around your loss
grief after a long illness, a sudden death, or a non-death loss each asks for different support.
- 3
Room for everything
the sadness, but also the anger, the guilt, the relief, and the moments of joy that feel confusing.
Approaches we use
Grief-informed talk therapy
Space to tell the story of your loss as many times as it needs telling, with a therapist trained to listen for what grief is doing underneath.
Trauma-informed care
When a loss was sudden, violent, or layered on older wounds, we pace the work so it stays safe.
Meaning-centered approaches
Rebuilding a sense of purpose and identity around the loss — who you are now, and what still matters.
Support through anticipatory loss
Counseling for the grief that begins before a death — for caregivers and families walking through a long illness.
"There is no timeline for grief. Some people come soon after a loss; others come years later. Both are the right time."

Frequently asked questions
It's been years since my loss. Is it too late for grief counseling?
No. Grief has no expiration date, and it's common for it to resurface around anniversaries, new losses, or life changes. It's never too late to get support.
My loss wasn't a death. Is grief counseling still right for me?
Yes. Divorce, estrangement, health changes, miscarriage, job loss — grief follows many kinds of loss, and all of them deserve support.
Do you accept insurance for grief counseling?
We work with most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and TRICARE, and verify your benefits before your first session.
How long does grief counseling take?
There's no set length. Some people find a few months of support carries them through the hardest stretch; others stay longer as new layers surface. You and your therapist will check in regularly about what's serving you.
Do you offer grief counseling near me?
We see clients in person in Evanston (serving the North Shore and Chicago's northern suburbs) and Naperville (serving the western suburbs), and online across Illinois — including Chicago, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka, Oak Park, and Wheaton.
Can teenagers get grief support here?
Yes. Several of our therapists work with teens processing the loss of a family member, friend, or a major life change, and we support parents alongside them.
