Couples & Family Therapy
Therapy for the relationships that matter most.
When the people closest to you are also the source of the most strain, it helps to have a third person in the room whose only agenda is the relationship. Couples and family therapy is a structured, respectful space to say what has been hard to say and to change the patterns that keep repeating.

What couples and family therapy can help with
The same argument on a loop. Growing distance, or the sense that you are roommates rather than partners. A breach of trust you are trying to decide what to do with. A family transition — a new baby, a blended family, an adult child, an aging parent — that has changed every role at once. Cultural, generational, or faith differences that keep surfacing. Estrangement you would like to repair, or grieve. None of these mean the relationship is failing; they mean it is asking for attention.
What couples and family therapy can help with
How it helps
Your therapist works with the relationship as the client, not with one person as the problem. Sessions slow the pattern down so everyone can see it, make room for each person to be heard, and practice a different way of responding. We draw on systemic and emotionally focused approaches that are well established for couples and families, and we hold the room so that hard conversations stay safe and productive. Some families combine joint sessions with individual sessions for one member; your therapist will suggest what fits.

What to expect
- 1
A first joint session
everyone shares what they hope will change; the therapist listens for the pattern, not for who is right.
- 2
A shared plan
concrete goals the relationship agrees on.
- 3
Practice between sessions
small, specific changes you try at home and bring back. Sessions are typically 50 minutes; some couples and families choose longer sessions. In person in Evanston or Naperville, or online anywhere in Illinois.

Frequently asked questions
My partner is reluctant. Can I come alone first?
Yes. Many people begin individually, and a therapist can help you think about how to invite your partner in. Some partners find it easier to join once they know what the room is like.
Do you work with families with teenagers?
Yes. Several of our therapists see families and teens together, and we can combine family sessions with individual support for a teen where that helps.
Is couples or family therapy covered by insurance?
Coverage for relationship therapy varies by plan. We verify your benefits and explain any difference before you start.
